The legend goes that in late 1960’s the ‘boy’ Norris Shepherdson was an apprentice for an engineering company repairing steam irons in an East End sweat shop. His boss (senior mechanic) decided that it was a good idea to go to work in a 3 piece suit and watch ‘the boy’ do all the work, Norris didn’t.
The laws of physics tells us that what goes up must come down, so, when a hand pump filled with thick motor oil flew several feet in the air it happened to land all over senior management.
Now, only one person to this day knows whether that thick black oil was ‘deliberately’ put in the pump and whether or not it was ‘aimed’ at the person who was more dressed for a night of ballroom dancing than a day’s graft… but his mind was already made up that he was leaving…
From that day was the birth of Norris Steam Services. Armed with nothing more than his tool box and a MK1 Blue Ford Escort van Norris was his own boss, employing his mother to take calls for repairs.
London was a much different place back then Norris recalls. You had the freedom to park and drive where you wanted. The Congestion Charge was not around and very few parking meters were in issue.
The end of the 20th Century saw a decline in the UK garment industry with cheaper manufacturing options from abroad forcing many factories to close. Norris Steam Services were forced to adapt and evolve our own business. The internet generation was now taking shape which allowed us to not rely on business from within London but worldwide.
